Hi! We are Joe and Clare; artists and makers, partners in life and business, proud parents to Hugo (human) and Nina (canine) and lovers of pretty much all things creative.

Joe is a painter, printmaker, musician, furniture builder and contractor. He’s also a kickass pie maker and home cook, fixer of all the broken things and a damn good dancer.

Clare is a food and lifestyle photographer, an obsessive prop collector, a newbie sewer and wannabe potter. She is a master salad maker, a fan of interior design and a big believer in the importance of good lighting.

We have been living, working and collaborating together for 20 years and are so excited about this new business. Poppy Bee Surfaces is an opportunity to combine our skills and experience and create innovative photo surfaces that are perfect for food and product photographers.

We hope you love what you see!

As a fine artist and builder, Joe has been making custom surfaces for Clare’s food photography business since the beginning. For the past several years, the two of us have discussed how we could turn his skills into a business, but we couldn’t see how. Shipping heavy surfaces didn’t seem practical and renting them out wasn’t realistic in our small New England town. The idea kept getting shelved and life went on until a couple of years ago when, on the advice of another photographer, Clare tried shooting on a vinyl surface. It worked beautifully, and suddenly there was a solution for how to make Joe’s surfaces marketable. Clare began experimenting with using more vinyl surfaces on shoots and discovered a ton of benefits she hadn’t anticipated; because vinyl is so light and portable, Clare was able to start bringing multiple surface options to location shoots. Since the vinyl isn’t absorbent, most types of spills that had previously stained her wood and metal surfaces were able to be easily cleaned up without incident. And because the vinyl surfaces can be printed on demand, we could create a more reasonable price point, making them accessible to hobby photographers, as well as pros.
