photography workshops

Real learning. Real scenes. Real results.

There’s something about being in the room together—with the props in your hands, the light changing by the minute, the smell of coffee and fresh bread in the air—that you just can’t replicate online.

That’s why I host hands-on, in-person food photography workshops right here in my Vermont studio.

These workshops are for photographers who want to level up their skills, refine their style, and shoot with intention. Whether you're looking to master natural light, hone your food styling, or create a consistent visual identity for your work, this is where we do it all—side by side.

"One of the best things I’ve ever done—not just for my creativity, but for my soul. Three days of pure joy and learning. Thank you, Clare." -David L.

What to Expect

No giant crowds or impersonal lectures here. I keep these workshops intimate so you actually get my attention—and plenty of it.

You’ll spend most of your time with a camera in hand, styling and shooting various assignments and I will be there for you every step of the way. That's why most of my workshops are suitable for ALL levels. Students who need more help get it, while those who prefer to work more independently are able to do so.

Beyond taking photos, there will be live demos by me, PDFs outlining the content covered in class and a final critique where you will receive feedback about your work.

Throughout the workshop, you will not only be learning from me, you will be learning from each other.

"Clare Barboza is one of the best teachers I’ve ever had. She knows her stuff and owns it, but doesn’t protect it." -Robert S.

Clare's food styling course is a game-changer. It not only deepened my understanding of how to artfully arrange and present food but also taught me invaluable techniques in composition and color theory specific to food photography. The hands-on approach and expert guidance helped me gain confidence in creating visually stunning dishes that not only look appetizing but also tell a story through their presentation. I am excited to bring home and apply the skills I have learned in this awesome course. Added bonus: you meet really wonderful people from all over! Highly recommended for anyone looking to blend creativity with culinary artistry :)

Your instructor

Hi, I’m Clare Barboza—professional photographer for over 25 years, with the last 15 focused on food.

I’m also the co-owner of Poppy Bee Surfaces (and yep, every single photo on this site? I took it).

Over the years, I’ve shot more than three dozen cookbooks and collaborated with brands, chefs, farms, and restaurants across the country. (Want to work together? Reach out to see if we're a good fit.)

Since 2008, I’ve been leading photography workshops, and they’ve become one of the most meaningful parts of my work.

Helping others uncover their creative voice—and actually trust it—isn’t just something I love; it feels like a big part of why I do what I do.

FAQ

Where do your workshops take place?

All in-person workshops are held at my photography studio in Brattleboro, Vermont. It’s a beautiful light-filled space in an old Cotton Mill that’s fully equipped for styling, shooting, and snacking. The town itself is pretty dreamy too—expect great antique shops, friendly people, and lots of charm.

How many students are in each workshop?

I keep these workshops limited to 10 people—so everyone gets plenty of personal attention. This isn’t a lecture. It’s hands-on, collaborative, and focused on helping you grow as a photographer.

Do I need to be an experienced photographer to attend?

Not at all. These workshops are perfect for all levels of photographers. Almost every one of my workshops has had a mix of beginners, intermediate photographers and pros and, because of how the classes are structured, I am able to give more attention to the folks who need it.

NOTE: In the Dive into Food Styling class, I do ask that students be comfortable using their cameras. If you aren't quite there, I recommend taking The Food Photography & Styling Intensive first.

What should I bring?

Bring your camera (DSLR or mirrorless), a favorite lens or two, a tripod, memory cards, and a laptop for reviewing and sharing your images. Oh, and stretchy pants—we do a lot of eating.

Is food provided?

Yes! We’ll have delicious lunches each day. That's on top of the ample amount of food you'll be shooting, which you're also welcome to snack on. I believe creativity flows better when you're well-fed.

Do I need to bring props or surfaces?

Nope. You’ll have access to my full collection of props and Poppy Bee surfaces during the workshop. That said, if there is a favorite prop you'd like to play with from home or a specific product you want to practice shooting, feel free to bring it with you!

Do you cover artificial lighting?

The core workshops are focused on natural light photography (it's not really feasible to have 10 students using artificial light in the same room 😂), but I often include an artificial light demo during a workshop. If that’s something you're hoping to learn, just ask.

Is there any post-processing or editing instruction?

No, I do not cover post processing in these workshops. However, there is lots of time for questions and I am very transparent about my own workflow and editing process. No question is off limits!

Do you offer payment plans?

When you make a purchase on our site, you will be given the option at checkout to pay in full or in 4 installments (interest free) through Shop Pay.

What’s your cancellation policy?

Workshops are all non-refundable unless I am able to fill your spot.
